Manchester United vs Villarreal Champions League Old Trafford – Cristiano Celebrates with the fans after scoring a late goal that wins the match!

Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed back the spotlight on at Old Trafford, barely 24 hours after Lionel Messi’s spectacular first goal for his new club PSG lit up the Champions League. Ronaldo’s late winner earned Man United a much-needed three points against Villarreal.

Villarreal were clearly ahead of Manchester United in the first half and were unlucky not to have scored 2 or more goals, but they were up against a world class inspired and top of form David de Gea. Clearly from the match, Villarreal were missing their hit man Gerard Moreno which caused them to be punished in the second half for not converting the chances.

There is hope on the horizon, though, because Manchester United is still equal on points with rivals Chelsea and Manchester City in the league rankings, with Liverpool only one point ahead of them – a strong victory against Villarreal will only see them add some more fire power with Rashford expected to return after the international break.

Bruno Fernandes believes he always thought Manchester United would see the chance to beat Villarreal a golden opportunity in their Champions League group stage encounter, and praised David de Gea for his important saves that ultimately helped United clinch the all-important win.

Bruno Fernandes speaking to BT Sport…

“I always had the feeling we could win the game. And when they scored, I felt we could come again and turn it around.

“After the goal of Alex [Telles] the push from the fans was unbelievable. Some amazing saves from David [De Gea] to keep the score at 1-1. Then at the end, strikers have that feeling to score and Cristiano helps us again.

“We finished with two strikers and we know any ball in the box they will be alive to it. We know they can score at any moment and that is why we continue with crosses. We are happy with three points.”

Solskjaer speaking to BT Sport…

“That’s what happens here at Old Trafford, it’s happened so many times before. Of course, we had to throw caution to the wind and we got lucky in the end.

“Sometimes its not about pass there and pass there it’s the crowd, the Stretford End has sucked a few balls in before, I know that and that’s probably what happened. When you’ve got Cristiano on the pitch you’ve always got a chance.

“Seriously, he’s so good in front of goal and he has an impact on everyone, the crowd, the players, the whole club.”
